We had a massive lighning storm last night. It lasted for about a half hour and some of the lightning strikes were just way too close for comfort. The power surged three times, but it stayed on. After Irene and Lee and the flooding and the cleanup, we were very glad that the rain was minimal.
About a half hour after it started, I noticed that Jake and Emma had disappeared. I found them outside with Doug watching the lightning. He had checked the radar and saw how far away the storm was and let them outside to watch it. They were in the driveway, striking powerful poses and pretending that they were sending the lightning. It was windy and dark, and the lightning lit up the sky. Occsionally we could hear a low rumble of thunder from way off in the distance.
The kids loved it. Every once and a while lightning would flash just as they struck their pose, and I'm not convinved that Emma realized it was just a coincidence. But the best part? Even Owen came out, conqurering his fear of thunder. We let him hear how quiet the thunder was because it was so far away, and he joined Jake and Emma, punching the air and bringing the lightning.
That fun lasted about fifteen minutes until I made everyone come inside to get ready for bed.
