With the loss of all our basement furniture after the flood, we had a lot of open space. With the kids all getting older and moving away from toddler toys and things, we decided to reconfigure the space. Emma will be getting a dance floor, Owen still has his train table and toys, and we made all the kids a LEGO table for the family LEGO.
The first main project we worked on was Jake's new LEGO space. His LEGO were slowly taking over his room. He likes to keep his kits together, create scenes, and then play with them. That takes space. And, the LEGO that were more for display were getting dusty--not good for his allergies.
His space is a work on progress, but he loves it. He still brings some up the kitchen table, but mostly he stays downstairs where he has room to spread out. He agreed to it when I promised that no child entering our home would be allowed to touch or play with the LEGO unless he was there. Owen had a playdate last week, and it went fine. I told them the rule, and the kids looked but didn't touch. I was down there the whole time, though . . . there will definitely be some increased supervision at first.
The tables hold his LEGO City collection and Harry Potter sets as these are the ones he plays with most. Emma's sets are housed down here as well . . . Jake's desire to have the Forbidden Forest in his Harry Potter scenes outweighs his annoyance with his sister. And he's been very good about letting Owen play, espcecially since the first time Owen saw the space, he said, "Jake, May I come in and play?" Emma and Owen have never intentionally destroyed his LEGO and respect the boundaries. We're lucky there.
The shelves hold his Indiana Jones, Creator, and other random sets. He's really hoping for some of the modular buildings for his birthday and Christmas, and he's already planned the space on his table for them. Eventually, I'd like to build him a larger space out of plywood that we can paint to look like ground and water, but for now, we're all happy.
